John Condon arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on the 11th of July 1851, when a minor of about 16 years of age. He was a resident of Portsmouth, NH by Oct 1866, when he applied for naturalization, and was sworn in as a US citizen on 26 Nov 1866, aged 32. He lived in Portsmouth, NH until early 1870, when he moved to Lawrence, MA, but returned within a couple of years. From 1873 until his death eleven years later, he lived on the corner of Bartlett (formerly Creek) and Islington Streets. The building he rented was divided in two, with half being the family's residence, the other used first as a variety store, and later a saloon. Called the "Condon House" at one point, there were also rooms for rent. Unfortunately, the building was torn down some time after 1956. The only photo I have found of the building was a partial glimpse of it in this image taken from the Frank Jones clock tower. It can be seen in lower left side of photo (with white pipe on roof), just above a Brewery building.

For the longest time, I never knew his whereabouts between the time he arrived in the US in 1851 and his 1868 second marriage. Now, with near certainty, I believe he was first married to a Mary Sullivan in Lowell, MA, on 22 June 1856. They probably had a son John Condon born 3 June 1857 in Lowell, MA, which would have been the John Jr who was seen in Portsmouth in 1883 and 1884, just prior to his father's passing. John Jr's 1873 navy enlistment listed his birth place as Portsmouth, NH, as did his 1893 death record. John Jr had been sent away to a reform school when a minor, and was released in 1872, the Portsmouth Journal reporting him "of this city". What became of John Sr's wife Mary is unknown, but presumably she had passed prior to 1868.

At left is the Condon/Mulligan plot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Church records do not show if John and Ellen are actually buried here, and there are no head stones (unless covered) for them. With these two surnames sharing a plot, it is likely they are here with daughter Margaret Mulligan.
