The Family of Jeremiah Brown and Charlotte Lewis of Cornville, Maine

10/20/2014

JEREMIAH BROWN, b. circa 1780-1790, perhaps in Athens, Maine; d. unknown. Married some time after 30 Mar 1820, when cert was issued at Cornville, ME, to CHARLOTTE LEWIS, b. ca 1796 in Cornville, Maine; d. 2 June 1882 in Wakefield, MA. She may have been the daughter of George Lewis, as she and Jeremiah sold a 1/10th part of his estate in Cornville, as heirs, in 1821. I have yet to check with Somerset County for George Lewis's probate, though I did not find one on Family Search.
With most of their children found to be born in Cornville, it seems likely that the Jeremiah seen there during the 1820 and 1830 censuses would be the correct family.
1820 Cornville, Maine census:
2 males -10; 1 M 26-44; 3 females -10; 1 F 16-25
1830 Cornville, ME census:
2 M 5-9; 1 M 10-14; 1 M 40-49; 2 F -5; 1 F 5-9; 2 F 10-14; 1 F 30-39
Picture
from the 28 Oct 1818 issue of the Hallowell Gazette.

There are additional youngsters in the household who are probably not from their marriage. This newspaper clipping (at left) shows Charlotte with two children (not known if she had these out of wedlock, or she was actually a widow).

I have not yet found a death record for Jeremiah Brown, or burial place. I did not find an 1840 census entry that matched him and family. For some reason, nearly the entire family moved to Massachusetts and lived in the Danvers/Middleton area. It is not clear if this took place before or after his decease.

The following is what I have currently researched about the known children of Jeremiah and Charlotte (Lewis) Brown of Cornville, Maine and their offspring:

UPDATE (9/29/2015)
With the recent release of the probate collection on Ancestry, I was able to get copies of Charlotte's will from Middlesex county, Massachusetts without having to make a trip there. All of the names found in this record confirmed those names I had listed above. Below are three of the pages from the probate file:

Thanks so much for posting this! I have been trying to find John S Brown's parents for a couple years now. He is my great great grandfather.

I'm still looking for sources to give me more concrete proof that John S. does indeed belong here with this family. The Brown name is NOT an easy one to research!

Your research is very interesting and I believe there is a connection between Charlotte Lewis and my Lewis ancestors. I am a descendant of Micah Lewis from Cornville, Maine.

I traveled up to Somerset County yesterday, and gathered more Lewis information. Writing it up now, though still not complete. I need George's probate file, but it is "missing". I have to go to Augusta and check with ME State Archives, to see if it was filed there.

I am a descendant of Jeremiah and Charlotte through their grand daughter Sophronia. Timothy first married Lydia S. Pomeroy in 1851. They first filed for divorce in 1855, but the case was dismissed. The divorce was finally granted in 1868 then he married Lexavilla Young. Lydia Pomeroy married West Daggert in Rock County, WI in 1857. I guess she was a bigamist. People who have been researching Timothy are pretty certain that all the children (except for Sophronia) belonged to Lexavilla. Sophronia's maternal line is in question. The divorce information can be found online in the records of Somerset, Maine. I have been unable to find a birth record for Sophronia. Her death certificate lists her mother as unknown.

Have you done any DNA testing? If Sophronia's mother was Lexavilla you should come up as a relatively close DNA match to the descendants of Warren T, Freddy, Arthur Augustus, Elva E Brown, Mary E Brown, and Willie Brown. Otherwise if you only shared Timothy (and not Lexavilla) as an ancestor the DNA would show a more distant relation.

Very excited. I have the Brown family bible. Read from it on Christmas eve. In it it has Sophronias birth date! My son and I recently moved to VA from Maine. The Bible is now over to apt. I am slowly moving in to. I always wondered first why Sophronias birth date was so much before Timothy & Lexavilla marr. Also birth certificate for my ancestor Arthur Augustus Brown listed "Lydia" as mother. Thought it was mistake. My family tree just took a major turn. Thanks to you. I will check Bible for Sophronias birth date and contact u. WOW...this news is big. Of all children listed only the last Willie Brown comes after Timothy and Lexavilla marr. Also searched for yrs. For Lexavilla maiden name...had been listed as Whitman and Witcomb...even on Timothy civil war record...not till I got to last child's death records (Willie Brown) did it say Young. Then easily found family in census records. My name is Roberta Jones Pearson tel 207 441 9852 email (on phone) not set up in Scottsville VA yet for computer. Please feel free to contact me anytime. You're given me a real high. Clearing this Lydia vs Lexavilla thing. Gosh. Thank you so much. Been very ill for years. Hence the move to be close to my deceased brothers family. Look forward to more sharing. If you don't hear from me please contact me. Note as I recall I have 3 births for Timothy and Lydia actual copies from Middleton (memory not clear)Middletown MASS. I have a lot of stuff to do to set up new apt. Will try to find 5 brief cases of birth, death and marriage records to go through. Bear with me. Kind regards, Roberta

Wow, the family Bible, that must be cool. Does it mention what denomination they were? I'd love to see a photo of it if you are able to post one once you get settled in.
